If your four-year-old aced a vocabulary test or your seven-year-old landed in the gifted program, a new study has some deflating news: the odds that intellectual edge lasts into adulthood are lower than most parents assume. Researchers tracking more than 11,000 children for fourteen years found that only 16 percent of kids who tested in the high-ability range at age seven still scored that high nine years later, at sixteen.
The finding lands right as thousands of families start a new school year wondering whether their child will make the cut for a gifted program, and it reframes a question a lot of parents carry quietly: does an early test score actually predict who my kid becomes?
The Study
The research, published in the journal Intelligence & Cognitive Abilities, was led by psychologist Angel Blanch at the Universitat de Lleida in Spain, working with colleagues at two universities in Madrid. The team drew on the Twins Early Development Study, a long-running project following thousands of families in the United Kingdom, and focused on 11,119 children who were tested repeatedly at ages four, seven, twelve, sixteen, and twenty-one.
Testing methods shifted as the children aged, from parent-administered vocabulary and puzzle tasks in early childhood to web-based reasoning tests by early adulthood. At age seven, researchers split participants into a normative group of 3,958 kids who scored in the average range and a high-ability group of 1,580 kids who scored above 115, the threshold typically used for gifted classification.
Twins Early Development Study data is unusually well suited to this kind of question. Families in the cohort were tracked continuously across two decades rather than being measured once and left alone. That continuous tracking is what let the team build what researchers call latent curve models, a statistical approach that maps not just where a child starts but the actual trajectory of change over time. Most gifted-program research relies on a single snapshot, which makes this study’s longitudinal design worth paying attention to on its own.
The results showed real movement in both directions. Only 16 percent of the high-ability seven-year-olds held onto that status by sixteen, while the rest drifted back toward average scores as they grew. Movement upward was even less common: just 8 percent of average-scoring seven-year-olds climbed into the high-ability range by sixteen. Stability improved somewhat for children tested later. Among kids who scored high at age twelve, about 23 percent kept that status through their late teens, suggesting that testing closer to adolescence gives a more reliable read than testing in early childhood.
The researchers also looked at what predicted whether a child’s high score held up. Genetic factors, measured through polygenic scores, and parental socioeconomic status were the strongest predictors of stability. Home chaos, early behavioral problems, and stressful life events showed little connection to whether a child kept a high score. One environmental factor did matter: school engagement. Kids who reported feeling connected to their schoolwork and teachers were more likely to see their scores rise over time, regardless of which starting group they were in.
What Experts Say
The pattern fits a well-documented phenomenon in developmental psychology known as the Wilson effect, first described by researcher Ronald Wilson, which holds that the heritability of intelligence increases as children age. In practice, that means environmental boosts and early test performance predict less and less the older a child gets, as genetic factors exert a steadier influence on where cognitive ability eventually settles.
This tracks with a separate, long-running concern among child psychologists about what happens when a young child is told, explicitly or implicitly, that they are “gifted.” Research on labeling effects has found that children who internalize a smart identity early often develop what psychologists call a fixed mindset, avoiding challenges out of fear that struggling would contradict the label. Kids in gifted programs report higher rates of anxiety, burnout, and imposter feelings than their peers, tied less to the actual difficulty of the work and more to the pressure of living up to an early designation.
Taken together, the research points in the same direction: a test score at age four or seven is a snapshot, not a life sentence, and treating it as a permanent identity carries its own psychological cost.
This does not mean gifted programs have no value, or that intelligence testing is worthless. Children who are truly under-stimulated in a standard classroom can gain real academic ground from advanced coursework, and identifying that need has real value. The distinction researchers are drawing is between using a test as one input among several, revisited over time, versus treating a single childhood score as a fixed sorting mechanism that determines a child’s educational track for the next decade.
What This Means for Parents
If your child scored well on an early assessment, the study is not a reason to worry that something is wrong if their scores look more average later. That drift toward the middle is the statistically expected outcome, not a sign of decline. The researchers found that early giftedness predicting later giftedness is closer to a coin flip than a guarantee, so treating a young child’s test result as a fixed trait sets up both the child and the parent for a letdown that has nothing to do with the child’s actual potential.
Praise effort and process over innate smartness. Instead of “you’re so smart,” specific praise like “you worked through that problem in a few different ways” reinforces the behaviors that predict growth, rather than a label that can crumble the first time a child hits something hard.
Pay attention to school engagement. It was the one factor in this study that predicted upward movement regardless of a child’s starting point. A kid who feels connected to their teachers and coursework has room to grow their abilities in ways a static test score cannot capture.
Push back gently on gifted-program culture if your child seems more anxious than energized by it. If a child ties their sense of worth to a gifted label, a lower grade or a hard subject can feel like proof they were never really smart, when in reality cognitive ability at that age is still very much in motion.
For families whose child scored in the average range, the same findings cut the other way. Upward movement into the high-ability tier by sixteen happened for 8 percent of average scorers, a real but modest number, and school engagement was the one lever available to any family regardless of a child’s genetic starting point. A child who did not test into a gifted program at seven has not been permanently ranked. The door stays open through adolescence, and the study’s own numbers back that up.
Talk to your child about the study’s finding in age-appropriate terms if the topic comes up, especially if your child has already absorbed the idea that being smart is a fixed part of who they are. Describing intelligence as something that keeps developing through adolescence, rather than something locked in by a single test, gives kids room to try, fail, and improve without feeling like each setback threatens their identity.
A Real-World Example
Here’s a hypothetical that mirrors what many families experience: a seven-year-old scores well above average on a school district’s gifted screening and gets placed in an accelerated program. By age eleven, the coursework has grown harder and her scores relative to her new peer group have leveled off. Under the old assumption that early testing locks in a fixed trajectory, that shift might look like a decline, something has gone wrong. Under this study’s framework, it looks like exactly what the data predicts: only 16 percent of early high scorers keep that exact ranking nine years later, and the other 84 percent simply move toward the range their genetics and continued development point them toward. Neither outcome reflects poorly on the child or the parents.
The practical difference shows up in how a parent responds. A parent unaware of this pattern might push harder, hire a tutor, or worry aloud about the child “losing” ability, all of which risk tying the child’s identity even more tightly to a label that was never as fixed as it seemed. A parent who understands the pattern can instead treat the plateau as normal, keep the focus on effort and engagement, and let the child’s actual trajectory unfold over adolescence rather than at age seven.
The Bigger Takeaway
Parents have long sensed that a single early test says less than school systems sometimes imply, and this study gives that instinct real data behind it. Gifted programs built around a single cutoff score at age five or seven are, by this research, misclassifying a meaningful share of kids in both directions. The deeper tension the study surfaces is between how much a young child’s mind is still forming and how permanently our schools tend to sort children based on an early snapshot of that mind. Regular re-evaluation through adolescence, the researchers note, gives a far more accurate read than any single childhood test ever could.
